Change Your Benefits
A qualified life event (QLE) is a change in your situation that can make you eligible for a special enrollment period, allowing you to make a change to your enrollment outside of the annual Open Enrollment period. In most cases, enrollment changes based upon a qualifying event must occur within 30 calendar days of that event and must be consistent with the event. You will also need to provide supporting documentation with your QLE.
For example, if you get married on March 1 and would like to add your spouse to coverage, you must enroll no later than March 30 and would be required to submit a copy of your marriage certificate with the change.
Some reasons for a QLE are listed below. For full details, click here to review our: Benefit Guide.
- Change in your FTE status from part-time to full-time or full-time to part-time that results in a significant increase or decrease in your premiums (medical or dental)
- Change in your legal marital status (marriage and divorce)
- Change in the number of your dependents (For example, through birth or adoption, or if a child is no longer an eligible dependent)
- Change in your spouse’s employment status (resulting in a loss or gain of coverage)
- Change in your employment resulting in a gain or loss of coverage
- You or one of your dependents turn 26
- Entitlement to Medicare or Medicaid*
*If you become eligible for or lose coverage under Medicaid or a state child health plan, you must enroll or terminate coverage within 60 days.
